What is BIS Licensing in India?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is an organisation dealing with standards of India and is under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. The main operations of this national standard body include product standardisation, certification, and testing.

BIS Certification ISI Scheme-I

The ISI mark scheme in India means a certification mark under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark, which certifies that a product complies with the specifications of standards laid down by the BIS. 

It is mandatory for a few products, such as cement, steel products, and electronics,  as per government norms, but otherwise is completely optional for most of the products to get an ISI mark certification.

ISI mark stands for a physical standardisation mark that represents that the product complies with the quality, safety, and reliability standards provided by ISI standards and BIS. It confirms that production, checking, and quality assurance have been performed in line with authorised norms.

Audited Products for BIS Approval :

IS 1171 covers specifications, sampling techniques, and testing procedures for   Ferromanganese. The license can be granted for all the particle sizes of the Ferromanganese specified in the specification and applied by the applicant/licensee, provided that the firm has all the necessary manufacturing and testing facilities for the manufacture and testing of all other particle sizes of the Ferromanganese proposed to be included in the license.

IS 1470 covers Silicomanganese's specifications, sampling technique, and testing procedures. The manufacturer shall maintain test records for the tests carried out to establish conformity. Sample Size according to the product manual is 5Kg (for lab sample, Compliance to Cl 6.1.3 of IS 1472 to be ensured)

To obtain BIS certification for the product, the manufacturer must produce a standard quality product that fulfils the Indian Standard Specifications (ISS).
