What is Registration EPR?
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy framework that makes producers responsible for how their products are handled when they are no longer useful.
EPR is an idea that has been used all over the world to reduce the damage that products do to the environment during their entire lifecycle. Under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, the EPR registration was made mandatory in India. Its goal is to cut down on the amount of plastic waste made in the country.
The EPR registration is mandatory for producers of plastic products, which includes importers, brand owners, and manufacturers. It requires them to make sure that the plastic waste from their products is collected, sorted, and thrown away in a way that is good for the environment.
Why is it important to sign up for EPR?
The system for registering EPRs is important for many reasons, such as:
Reducing plastic waste
The EPR registration system aims to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the country by making sure that producers take care of the waste from their products.
Getting people to recycle
The EPR registration system gets people to recycle plastic waste by making sure that producers are in charge of collecting and sorting the trash that their products create.
Promoting environmental sustainability
The EPR registration system promotes environmental sustainability by ensuring that producers are responsible for the end-of-life management of their products.
Making jobs available
The EPR registration system makes jobs available in the waste management and recycling industry.
Generating revenue
The EPR registration system generates revenue for the government through the collection of registration fees.
How does the system work for EPR Registration?
This is how the EPR registration system works:
Registration
Under the EPR registration system, people who make things out of plastic need to register. In order to register, you have to give information about the plastic products you make or import and how much plastic waste they make.
Collection and segregation
Producers are responsible for ensuring the collection and segregation of the plastic waste generated from their products. They can do this by setting up their collection and segregation system or by engaging with authorized collection and segregation agencies.
Recycling
Producers are required to ensure that the plastic waste generated from their products is recycled in an environmentally sound manner. They can do this by setting up their own recycling center or by working with authorized recycling agencies.
Reporting
Producers must give the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) an annual report on the amount of plastic waste they make, collect, and recycle.
Noncompliance
Producers who don't follow the rules of the EPR registration system could be fined or have their registration taken away.
