  •  BIS Registration (CRS)
Step by step guide to BIS Certification for Solar products

In a very competitive market, high-quality items are essential. Among the schemes that BIS, the Indian Standards body, has instituted to ensure that products, such as solar devices and components, are safe and functional is the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). These gadgets, which include power converters and PV modules, must meet BIS requirements for dependability, efficiency, and quality. These ensure better performance, India's targets towards renewable energy, and enhanced manufacturers' stature. This blog will guide you in availing yourself of the BIS CRS Registration so that your products conform to Indian Standards.

What is the Bureau of Indian Standards?

The BIS Act of 2016 established the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure the quality, safety, and dependability of products in India. BIS provides certifications like ISI Mark, CRS, and hallmark, which makes it compulsory for specific products to meet Indian Standards before they are sold in India. According to the latest QCO "Solar Systems, Devices, and Components Goods Order, 2025," all specified solar products, like PV modules, must meet the efficiency standards and carry the BIS Standard Mark. The Bureau of Indian Standards ensures that such products meet set standards, and compliance is maintained through market surveillance.

How to Get BIS Registration (Scheme II) for Solar Systems Components in India?

Let us get an idea about the process involved in BIS registration of the products in India:

  • Select relevant Indian standards: Determine which IS will apply to the product you want to have CRS registration.
  • Manak Online Account: Fill out the online application form through the BIS portal.
  • Submission of Documents: Upload all related documents, such as an address proof factory, product test report, authorizing signatory details, and some proof of having a business on record.
  • Product Testing at BIS Lab: Send samples of your product to an Indian lab certified by BIS for testing.
  • Get Test Report: Upload the test report generated by the BIS-recognized lab at the BIS website.
  • BIS Examination & Validation: The BIS officials review the test report and, if necessary, audit the manufacturing unit.
  • Issue of CRS: After the verification of the product, BIS issues a CRS registration number and allows using the BIS CRS mark on the product.
  • Labeling & Compliance: Certified products must carry the BIS CRS symbol before entering the Indian market.
  • Validity & Renewal: The certificate should be renewed every two years before the expiry. It typically takes 30 to 90 days, with pricing that incurs a fee besides the cost of testing charges payable to the BIS.

Types of Solar Components Covered Under BIS CRS Registration in India

These are a few categories mentioned by BIS for the compulsory registration scheme:

i) Crystalline Silicon Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) modules (Si wafer-based)

ii) Thin-Film Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules (a-Si, CiGs and CdTe)

iii) Power converters for use in a photovoltaic power system

iv) Utility-interconnected photovoltaic inverters

v) Storage battery

Products List Of BIS Registration for Solar Appliances in India

Given below is the list of products that are mandatory to have a BIS license under Scheme II:

  1. BIS Registration for Crystalline Silicon Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules - IS 14286
  2. BIS Registration for Thin-film Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules - IS 16077
  3. BIS Registration for Safety of Power Converters for Use in Photovoltaic Power Systems  - IS 16221 (Part-2)
  4. BIS Registration for Utility-Interconnected Photovoltaic Inverters - IS 16169
  5. BIS Registration for Secondary Cells and Batteries for Solar Photovoltaic Application - IS 16270

Conclusion

Solar components registered with BIS will guarantee that the products are safe, high-quality, and meet Indian standards. Both domestic and international firms must adhere to BIS regulations to register for CRS under Scheme II. Solar items that are appropriately certified can join the Indian market legally, encouraging innovation and dependability while supporting government initiatives for the growth of sustainable energy.
