BIS Certification for
Tee and Strap Hinges IS 206
Tee and strap hinges are essential hardware fittings used in gates, doors, shutters, agricultural equipment, storage units, and heavy-duty industrial enclosures across residential, commercial, and infrastructure applications in India, where load-bearing strength, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish are critical to long-term performance. Under Section 14 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has issued a Quality Control Order making ISI Mark certification under IS 206:2010 mandatory for all manufacturers supplying tee and strap hinges in the Indian market.
IS 206 specifies manufacturing requirements for hinges produced from mild steel sheet (Grade 0 as per IS 1079) and mild steel wire (minimum ¼H grade as per IS 280), covering eleven types across light, medium, and heavy weight categories for both tee and strap variants, with quality parameters governing dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish. Manufacturers, importers, and traders supplying tee and strap hinges without a valid BIS licence are liable to penalties, including product seizure and fines, under the BIS Act, 1986.
Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Tee and Strap Hinges (IS 206) :
- Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Quality control order.
- As per the Quality control order, all the manufacturers of Tee and Strap Hinges are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

- In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
- For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test equipment for internal factory test laboratories.
