BIS CERTIFICATION OF SWITCHES FOR DOMESTIC AND SIMILAR PURPOSES IS 3854:1997

It can be used at homes, offices or at any other place wherever required. A Bell Push switch always maintains a broken circuit, unless the button is pressed. A common use is control of lighting, where multiple switches may be wired into one circuit to allow convenient control of light fixtures. Switches in high-powered circuits must have special construction to prevent destructive arcing when they are opened.

Introduction to Indian Standard IS 3854; Switches for Domestic and Similar Purposes

• IS 3854 cover Switches for Domestic and Similar Purposes. This standard applies to manually operated general purposes witches with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 63 A, intended for household and similar fixed-electrical installations either indoors or outdoors. The rated current is limited to 10 A for switches provided with screwless terminals. The standard applies to boxes for switches with the exception of flush mounting boxes for flush-type switches. The extensions of rated current values to 16 A is under consideration for switches provided with screwless terminal.

An extension of the scope to switches for rated voltages higher than 440 V is under consideration.

• Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality control) order.
• As per this order, allthe manufacturers of Switches for Domestic and Similar Purposes are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
