BIS Certification for Steel Tubes, Tubulars IS 1239 Part 1

BIS Certification for Steel Tubes, Tubulars and Other Wrought Fittings (Steel Tubes) IS 1239 Part 1

IS 1239 Part 1

It is mandatory to obtain BIS Certification for manufacturers supplying Steel Tubes, Tubulars, and Other Wrought Fittings (Steel Tubes) in the Indian Market. Steel tubes are used in various sectors, including construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing. They are designed as pipelines in the energy industries. The strength and reinforcement brought in by steel tubes are needed for applications that require performance and resistance.

Under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, IS 1239 Part 1 is governed. It is an Indian Standard specifying the quality, strength, and safety requirements of steel tubes, tubular and other fittings. In this blog, we will explore the key aspects of ISI Mark Certification of IS 1239 Part 1, its benefits, the application process, and its cost for both Domestic & Foreign manufacturers.

Overview of BIS License for Steel Tubes, Tubulars, and Other

Steel tubes are cylindrical hollow structures, composed primarily of steel. They are a durable and long-lasting metal consisting of an iron and carbon alloy. These tubes are offered in different diameters, forms, and grades to meet the demands of a range of business, industrial, and domestic applications.

The Recent QCO of  "Steel Tubes, Tubulars and Other Wrought Steel Fittings: Steel Tubes" was issued. This product is covered within the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark regulatory and certification scheme labelled (Scheme-I of Schedule II), which means that any manufacturer and importer must obtain a valid license before a designated date, i.e., all manufacturers and importers will not be allowed to manufacture, import, or sell these products in the Indian markets.

Key Specification of IS 1239 Part 1

IS 1239 Part 1 outlines specifications for steel tubes. Below, we have mentioned a few highlights from the Indian Standard. You can go through them one by one:

  • Chemical Composition: Mild steel with max percentages of 0.20% Carbon, 1.30% Manganese, 0.040% Sulphur, and 0.040% Phosphorus.
  • Dimensions: IS 1239 pipes, as per the standard, are nominal bore (NB) size from 15mm to 150mm, and the standard length for IS 1239 pipes is not over 7m.
  • Tolerance on Thickness and Mass: IS 1239 pipes with weights depend upon the manufacturing process; e.g., welded tubes have a tolerance of +0% (not limited) and a tolerance of -8% or -10% for light tubes.
  • Joints: The standard describes types of steel tubes and fittings, but does not describe joints; however, the standard includes socketed tubes with parallel threads that are prepared for running joints.
  • Lengths: Most IS 1239 pipes will have random lengths from 3 to 18m, and the common random lengths are 4m to 7m.
  • Galvanising: When galvanising IS 1239, a protective zinc coating is applied to IS 1239 steel pipes by hot-dip galvanising.

Requirement for IS 1239 Part 1 to Obtain ISI Mark in India

  • Conformity of Raw Material as per IS 1239 (Part 1)
  • In-house testing laboratory for mandatory tests
  • Competent Quality Control Personnel
  • Adherence to the BIS guidelines for Steel Tubes, Tubulars, and other wrought fittings as per Indian standard IS 1239 (Part 1)
  • There are 3 major categories of documents required to get the ISI registration:  Administrative Details, Technical Details, Quality Control Personnel Details and Commercial Details.

BIS Certification Process for Steel Tubes, Tubular, and Wrought Fittings

  • Prepare Documents - Get all your documents, such as factory license, quality control plan, specifications of raw material, etc.
  • Get Laboratory Results - The samples should be sent to a BIS-registered laboratory for testing the chemical composition.
  • Get Factory Inspected - The BIS officers would inspect the extraction of the quality control document, with the factory layout.
  • Get Product Licenses - The BIS issues license approval once it is satisfied with the Inspection of the license and examination of test reports, to the consenting license, which will allow you to use the Standard Mark, meaning the blister tin ingot complies with Indian Standards.
