BIS CERTIFICATION OF PVC INSULATED CABLES FOR WORKING VOLTAGES UP TO AND INCLUDING 1100V IS 694:2010
PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is widely used in electrical cable construction for insulation, bedding and sheathing. It was the 1950s when PVC started to replace rubber insulated and sheathed cables in general household wiring due to its ease of processing. PVC is cost-effective and also has excellent ageing properties and typically exceeds a 25 to 30 year service life.
PVC Insulated Cable is used in the following areas –

- PVC wires and cables are preferred as cross-linked PVC offers better temperature resistance.
Introduction to Indian Standard IS 694; PVC insulated cables for working voltages up to and including 1100V
- IS 694 cover PVC insulated cables for working voltages up to and including 1100V. This standard covers general requirements of single and multicore cables/cords with rigid as well as flexible annealed bare/tinned copper and aluminium conductor, insulated and sheathed (if any) with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V ac, 50 Hz used in electric power and lighting including cables for outdoor and low temperature use. These cables may be used on dc systems for rated voltages up to and including 1 500 V to earth. This standard also includes cables with fire performance category in FR (Flame retardant) and category FR-LSH (Flame retardant low smoke and halogen) with conductor temperature not exceeding 70°C or 85°C. These cables require to qualify and comply the testing as specified in the respective category.

Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of PVC insulated cables for working voltages up to and including 1100V (IS 694) :
- Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality control) order.
- As per this order, allthe manufacturers of PVC insulated cables for working voltages up to and including 1100V are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
