Introduction to Indian Standard IS 15627; Automotive Vehicles– Pneumatic Tyres for Two and Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles

• IS 15627 cover Automotive Vehicles– Pneumatic Tyres for Two and Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles. This standard specifies the general, dimensional and performance requirements of new diagonal and radial ply pneumatic tyres designed for two wheelers (L1 and L2 category of vehicles as defined in IS 14272), three wheelers (L5 category of vehicles as defined in IS 14272) ,quadricycles (L7 category of vehicles as defined in IS 14272), E-rickshaws and E-carts. However, it does not apply to tyres designed for competitions.
• IS 15627 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Automotive Vehicles– Pneumatic Tyres for Two and Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles as follows

Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Automotive Vehicles– Pneumatic Tyres for Two and Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles (IS 15627) :

• Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industrial Policy and Promotion(LR Section) after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Pneumatic Tyres and Tubes for Automotive Vehicles  (Quality control) order, 2009
• As per this Quality control order, allthe manufacturers of Automotive Vehicles– Pneumatic Tyres for Two and Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

Licence is granted to use Standard Mark as per IS 15627:2022 with the following scope:

• In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
• For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test equipment for internal factory test laboratories.
