Oil-well cements are used for cementing work in the drilling of oil wells where they are subject to high temperatures and pressures. They usually consist of portland or pozzolanic cement (see below) with special organic retarders to prevent the cement from setting too quickly. Oil Well cements are used in the form of slurries in conditions encountered in drilling bore hole for oil exploration- not used for structural concrete although it will easily meet the requirement of OPC. Used in Extreme conditions in the form of slurry with requirement such as: IS 8229 cover Oil well Cement. This standard covers nine classes of oil-well cement used for the purpose of securing oil-well pipe casing with the surrounding earth and rocks.
Specification of IS 8229
IS 8229 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Oil well Cement as follows
(i) Insoluble Residue
(ii) Loss of ignition
(iii) Fineness
(iv) Setting time
(v) Soundness
(vi) Chemical Testing
(vii) Free water content of the slurry
(viii) Magnesium Oxide
Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Oil well Cement (IS 8229) :
Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Cement (Quality control) order. As per the Cement (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Oil well Cement are obligated to obtain the ISI Mark Certification.
