Νeedle punched, Nonwoven geotextiles produced from polypropylene staple fibers. Nonwoven geotextiles are used in many civil engineering and building applications and are designed to offer filtration, separation, and erosion control functions. They are exceptional for road, railway, drainage, and landfill applications. Introduction to Indian Standard IS 16653 : 2017; Needle-punched non-woven geobags.
This standard specifies requirements for three types of geobags made from needle-punched non-woven fabric of polyester (PES) or polypropylene (PP), used for coastal and waterways protection applications such as revetments; river training; construction of groynes and artificial reefs, etc, in order to minimize soil erosion and control floods. The survivability/durability of geobag depends upon water pressure, soil condition, type of contents of geobag, that is, sand or gravels, water pH and temperature etc. Woven slit film geotextiles, that is, geotextiles made from yarns of a flat, tape-like character, shall not be used for the manufacture of geobags for permanent erosion control applications. This standard does not apply to other types of geo- synthetic erosion control materials such as turf reinforcement mats.
IS 16653 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the needle-punched non-woven geobags as follows :
(i) Material of geobags and prefabrication thread
(ii) Construction of geobags (prefabrication) i.e seam stich density, distance of sewing from edges, distance of two rows of stitches, length of loose loop, uniformity of stitching etc
(iii) Wide Width Tensile Strength
(iv) Elongation
(v) Abrasion Resistance, retained tensile strength in machine and cross machine direction
(vi) Trapezoidal Tear Strength
(vii) CBR Puncture Resistance
(viii) Permittivity
(ix) Water permeability at 100 mm waterhead
(x) Apparent opening size (AOS)
(xi) Polymer Type
(xii) Mass
(xiii) Length of Geobag
In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards. As per the Geo Textiles (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Needle punched non-woven geobags are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
