The jute geotextile used as separator which prevents intermixing of the aggregate material and the subgrade under the action of repeated loads, where intermixing reduces the shear strength and stability of the aggregate layer. Introduction to Indian Standard IS 14715 : Part 1 : 2016;  Jute Geotextiles - Strengthening of Sub-Grade in Roads. This standard (Part 1) lays down requirements of woven and non-woven jute geotextile (JGT) for strengthening of road sub-grades.

Selection of jute geotextile (woven) shall be decided principally on CBR (California Bearing Ratio), grain size distribution of soil and the in-situ permeability of sub-grade soil, volume of traffic (denoted by ESAL-Equivalent Single Axle Loading) and the allowable rut-depth. Jute geotextiles covered under this standard are suitable for strengthening of flexible pavements on weak road sub-grades subjected to relatively low traffic load and intensity. Jute geotextiles control subsidence of a pavement by separating and preventing intermixing of the soft sub-grade and the harder sub-base, migration of soil particles and allows water to permeate across it.

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the following Order, namel Geo Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022. As per the Geo Textiles (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Jute Geotextiles - Strengthening of Sub-Grade in Roads are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
