Hard Armor is a term used to describe permanent stabilization solutions, which exist in many forms, both vegetated and non-vegetated. Erosion protection structures or armour systems dissipate the hydraulic forces that cause erosion, and they preserve the subgrade soil or fill soil behind it. Geotextiles provide separation, stabilization and filtration between the subgrade soil and the rip-rap, gabions or pre-cast blocks to prevent piping and erosion of fine soil particles while allowing the free passage of water. Introduction to Indian Standard IS 16392 Geotextiles for Permanent Erosion Control in Hard Armor Systems.
IS 16392 covers Geotextiles for Permanent Erosion Control in Hard Armour Systems. This standard covers general and performance requirements for geotextiles used between energy absorbing armor systems and the in-situ soil to prevent soil loss resulting in excessive scour and to prevent hydraulic uplift pressures causing instability of the permanent erosion control system. This standard does not apply to other types of geosynthetic erosion control materials such as turf reinforcement mats. Woven slit film geotextiles, that is, geotextiles made from yarns of a flat, tape-like character, shall not be used for permanent erosion control applications
IS 16392 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Geotextiles for Permanent Erosion Control in Hard Armour Systems as follows :
(i) Type of Geotextile
(ii) Roll Length
(iii) Roll Width
(iv) Grab Strength
(v) Sewn Seam Strength
(vi) Trapezoidal Tear Strength
(vii) CBR Puncture Strength
(viii) Burst Strength
(ix) Permittivity
(x) Apparent Opening Size
(xi) Durability Properties
(xii) Packing
In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the following Order, namel Geo Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022.
