A geomembrane is a synthetic membrane liner or barrier with a very low permeability that is used in conjunction with any geotechnical engineering material to regulate fluid (or gas) migration in a human-made project, structure, or system. IS 17374:2020 covers Geosynthetics - Reinforced HDPE membrane for effluents and chemical resistance lining. This standard prescribes requirements for reinforced high density polyethylene (HDPE) membrane laminated with low density polyethylene (LDPE) or suitable combination of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) for use as proper disposal of domestic and industrial effluents, solid wastes sights and sewage pond, in oil exploration industry, dairy industry, sugar industry, pharmaceutical industry, distillery, agrochemicals, and mining etc.

 

The tests used to characterize the reinforced HDPE membrane are intended to ensure good workmanship and quality and are not necessarily adequate for design purposes in view of the importance of environmental factors and specific performance objectives. Other tests are necessary to establish chemical resistance and durability under the condition of particular application as per Annex H.

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the following Order, namel. Geo Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022. As per the Geo Textiles (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Geosynthetics - Reinforced HDPE membrane for effluents and chemical resistance lining are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

• In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
• For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test equipment for internal factory test laboratories.
