BIS Certification for Geogrids for Flexible Pavements IS 17371

Introduction to Indian Standard IS 17371:2020;  Geogrids for flexible pavements. IS 17371:2020 covers Geogrids for flexible pavements. This standard specifies material properties and specifications that are required for geogrids to be used as reinforcement /stabilisation in base, subbase and subgrade in the design of flexible pavement structures.

This standard is a specification aid for material purchase and shall not be used as design or construction guideline. Design of geogrid reinforced flexible pavements shall be carried out as per standard practices recommended by the Indian Roads Congress using the mechanistic empirical method, or global practices including Structural Number based on the AASHTO Method. The input parameters shall include parameters relating to the interaction between the geogrids and the surrounding pavement component material.

It should be noted that there are other types of geosynthetics, such as geogrids, that can be used as reinforcement /stabilisation for flexible pavements and should not be excluded as alternate solutions.

 

Specification of IS 17371

IS 17371 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the  Geogrids for flexible pavements as follows :

(i)           Dimensional Stability

(ii)         Ultimate tensile strength

(iii)        Tensile strength at 2 percent strain

(iv)        Tensile strength at 5 percent strain

(v)          Junction strength

(vi)        Width

(vii)       Roll Length

(viii)     Material of Geogrids

 

Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Geogrids for flexible pavements (IS 17371:2020)

 In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the following Order, namely Geo Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022. As per the Geo Textiles (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Geogrids for flexible pavements are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

• In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
• For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test equipment for internal factory test laboratories.
