BIS Certification for
Fire Retardant Plywood IS 5509
Fire-retardant plywood is a critical safety material used in building interiors, furniture, modular kitchens, false ceilings, and public infrastructure where fire resistance is a regulatory and safety requirement. Under Section 14 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has issued a Quality Control Order making ISI Mark certification under IS 5509:2021 mandatory for all manufacturers supplying this product in the Indian market. IS 5509 defines the complete performance and safety requirements for fire-retardant plywood across six types, governing parameters including flammability, flame penetration, rate of burning, water resistance, moisture content, static bending strength, and dimensional tolerances. Manufacturers, importers, and traders supplying fire-retardant plywood without a valid BIS licence are liable to penalties, including product seizure and fines under the BIS Act, 1986.
Specification of IS 5509
IS 5509 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Fire Retardant Plywood as follows
(i) Dimension and tolerances

(vi) Moisture content test
(vii) Static Bending strength
Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Fire Retardant Plywood (IS 5509) :
Under section 14 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, has issued the Quality control order. As per the Quality control order, all the manufacturers of Fire Retardant Plywood are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

- In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
- For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test equipment for internal factory test laboratories.
- Apart from the charges mentioned above in the table, we may ask you to pay/reimbursement for a Pre-Visit at your Factory Premises to ensure the conformity of your product as per the relevant Indian Standard & BIS guidelines for its BIS certification.
