If you manufacture or import Ferrochromium in India, obtaining BIS certification under IS 1170 is a legal requirement enforced by the Ministry of Steel. Under the Quality Control Order issued pursuant to Section 14 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, all manufacturers of Ferrochromium must hold a valid ISI Mark before placing their product in the Indian market.
Ferrochromium is a critical ferroalloy used primarily in stainless steel and special alloy production, making quality control and standardisation essential for both safety and industrial performance. Non-compliance can result in product seizure, heavy financial penalties, and permanent loss of market access.
Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Ferrochromium (IS 1170
Under Section 14 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, the Ministry of Steel, in consultation with BIS, has issued a mandatory Quality Control Order for Ferrochromium. Every manufacturer, whether Indian or foreign, must hold a valid BIS licence before selling Ferrochromium in India.
Operating without ISI Mark certification is a punishable offence under Indian law.

BIS Certification Process for Ferrochromium
The process can be undertaken and certified for the Indian manufacturer and for the foreign manufacturers:
BIS Certification India for Indian Manufacturers (Standard Timeframe – 30 days)
BIS FMCS Certification for Foreign Manufacturers (Standard Timeframe – 180 days)

To qualify for BIS certification under IS 1170, manufacturers must meet the following prerequisites:
- Raw materials conforming to IS 1170 specifications
- In-house testing laboratory equipped for mandatory tests
- Competent Quality Control Personnel
- Full adherence to BIS guidelines under IS 1170

BIS Certificate Cost for Ferrochromium
Expenses involved in obtaining BIS certificate for Ferrochromium as per IS 1170 under the Product Certification (Scheme-I) of BIS :
- In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
