Introduction to Indian Standard IS 302 (Part 2 - Sec 201); Safety of household and similar electrical appliances– Electric immersion water-heaters

• IS 302 (Part 2 - Sec 201) cover Safety of household and similar electrical appliances– Electric immersion water-heaters. This standard deals with the safety of portable electric immersion heaters for household and similar purpose, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V.  Appliances not intended for normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliance intended to be used by laymen in shop s, in light industry and on farm s, are within the scope of this standard.  As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances, which are encountered by all persons in and around the horne .

This standard, does not in general, takes into account,

1. The use of appliance by young children or infirm persons without supervision; and
2. playing with the appliance by young children

Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Safety of household and similar electrical appliances– Electric immersion water-heaters (IS 302 (Part 2 - Sec 201)) :

• Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality control) order.
• As per this order, allthe manufacturers of Safety of household and similar electrical appliances– Electric immersion water-heaters are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
