Introduction to Indian Standard IS 9968 (Part 1); Elastomer insulated cables
- IS 9968 (Part 1) cover Elastomer insulated cables. This standard specifies the requirements of elastomer insulated cables for fixed wiring, flexible cables and flexible cords for electric power and lighting for operation at voltages upto and including 1 100 volts.
- 2 The following types of cables and cords are covered in this standard.
- 2.1 Cables for Fixed Wiring
Braided and compounded/varnished,
Elastomer sheathed (normal duty), and
Elastomer sheathed (normal duty) with earth continuity conductor.
- 2.2 Flexible Cables
Braided and varnished, and
Elastomer sheathed (heavy duty).
- 2.3 Flexible Cords

- IS 9968 (Part 1) specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Elastomer insulated cables as follows

Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Elastomer insulated cables (IS 9968 (Part 1)) :
- Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality control) order.
- As per this order, allthe manufacturers of Elastomer insulated cables are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

- In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
