Introduction to Indian Standard IS 613 covers Copper rods and bars for electrical purposes. This standard specifies the manufacturing, chemical and physical requirements and testing of Copper rods and bars for electrical purposes.
Chemical composition of copper used to manufacture the product shall conform to Grades Cu-ETP and Cu-FRHC of IS 191:2007. No testing of the product for chemical composition is required if the copper is ISI marked and received with the manufacturer’s test certificate.
IS 613 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Copper rods and bars for electrical purposes as follows

Under section 14 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, has issued the Quality control order. As per the Quality control order, all the manufacturers of Copper rods and bars for electrical purposes are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

- In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
- For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test equipment for internal factory test laboratories.
