Composite cements are cements in which a proportion of the Portland cement clinker is replaced by industrial by-products, such as granulated blastfurnace slag (gbs) and power station fly ash (also known as pulverized-fuel ash or pfa), certain types of volcanic material (natural pozzolanas) or limestones.
Composite Cement is used in the following areas –
- Suitable for constructions of dwellings or residential buildings or retaining concrete, canals, channels, & edging productions, in plastering, & mortar applications.
- Also suitable for ready-mixed concrete where high compressive strength is not required
Introduction to Indian Standard IS 16415 Composite Cement
- IS 16415 cover Composite Cement. This standard specifies the manufacturing, chemical and physical requirements and testing of Composite Cement.
- IS 16415 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Composite Cement- Specification as follows
(i) Fineness
(ii) Setting time
(iii) Soundness
(iv) Compressive strength
(v) Fly ash testing
(vi) Isoluble residue
(vii) Loss of ignition, etc
Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Composite Cement- Specification (IS 16415) :
Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Cement (Quality control) order. As per the Cement (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Composite Cement- Specification are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
