Category: BIS Registration (CRS)
Visual Display Units (VDUs) and Video Monitors have become standard in everyday consumer and industrial use. As the choice of screen sizes expands, and demand for high resolution and large format displays increases, the need to ensure the safety and quality of such products becomes critical - particularly in markets such as India.
In July 2013, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) added a number of products to the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). One of these was Visual Display Units, Video Monitors of size screen 32″ & above. Under scheme II of Schedule II, Visual Display Units and Video Monitors of a screen size 32″ & above can get BIS registered to show that the product quality is good and it is safe.
VDU (Visual Display Unit) is an output device used interchangeably for a monitor, but does include other display units, including big screens, projectors, etc. VDU is composed of a screen on which you view characters or graphics to disseminate the information, events, etc. A visual display unit is an electronic device that produces all the graphical moving images or image sequences by quickly changing an image to develop the seeming motion.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has specified that VISUAL DISPLAY Units (VDUs) be registered and manufactured as per IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 under the Compulsory Registration Scheme from BIS, and BIS registration is mandatory for visual display units for foreign and domestic manufacturers.
For an application for a BIS Licence to move ahead, the applicant must demonstrate that they satisfy those four core criteria. From that point forward, BIS registration cannot move forward:
1. Manufacturer: A BIS certification is only issued to the actual manufacturer- not a trader or importer. An importer may only act as an Authorised Indian Representative (AIR) for a foreign manufacturer.
2. Factory Address: The complete and valid address of the factory to which the product is manufactured is required. The manufacturer must apply for a separate BIS licence for the same product manufactured at separate locations.
3. Product: One BIS licence is required for each type of product. However, multiple models may be covered under a single BIS licence if they fall within one product category.
4. Brand/Trademark: A franchised product/band/trademark has respective BIS licences even if it is the same product.
Let's discuss the BIS Registration Procedure. BIS Scheme-II contains different ways for both processes, i.e. for Domestic (Indian) and Foreign manufacturers.
1. Process for Foreign Manufacturer:
2. Process for Domestic Manufacturer:
