Category: BIS Registration (CRS)
The BIS Registration (CRS) for Electronic Musical System with input power below 200 Watts is mandatory under IS 616. As per BIS Scheme II of Schedule II, this ensures safety, reliability, and quality standards for sale or import in India. Each product of the Compulsory Registration Scheme must be tested in BIS-approved laboratories. Once certified, the product receives a BIS Registration Number, authorizing the use of the Standard Mark on its label, signifying safety, quality, and reliability.
On 3rd July 2013, the Bureau of Indian Standards stated that all models in the category of Electronic Musical System with Input Power 200W and above are required to be registered with BIS to enter the Indian Consumer Market. An electronic musical system should conform to the Indian Standards IS 616. No musical system can be launched in the Indian market without the BIS Registration.
Note: According to the recent Central Government update, Indian Standard 616 has been superseded by IS/IEC 62368 (Part 1). To know more, connect with the ERCS Team.
Electronic Musical Systems comprise sound-producing electronics, including learning and play-related electronic musical devices such as electronic keyboards, musical toy instruments, drum pads, and sound-based educational devices, and are subject to various specifications of performance, safety, and quality.
BIS CRS certification is mandatory for manufacturers and importers of Electronic Musical Systems if they plan to sell these products in India. By complying with such a standard, manufacturers and importers can demonstrate compliance with certain basic benchmarks for safety in the design of these products and develop consumer trust and enhance product reliability.

The Electronics and Information Goods order from 2021, which received updates through a Quality Control Order, will enforce Indian Safety Standards on all electronic products that fall under this order until 22 January 2026. The products must undergo testing and obtain certification from the BIS and display the BIS Standard Mark. The purveying of this order comes into force after six months from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
