BIS Certification for Mini Domestic Water Heater for Use with Piped Natural Gas (PNG) IS 17150

BIS Certification for Mini Domestic Water Heater for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in India

IS 17150 is an Indian standard that describes the safety and quality of mini domestic water heating equipment designed to operate with piped natural gas (PNG) and is available for use in India under BIS certification. This is a product generally found in residential settings that require an instant hot water supply. In residential and household applications, mini water heaters are typically used for bathing, cooking, and cleaning.

The market is developing such great momentum that it will entice many traders into the import and export sector. In the following article, we will elaborate on the importance of BIS certification for mini domestic water heaters, the standard specifications and requirements they have to conform to, and the convenience for users and consumers.

Overview of Mini Domestic Water Heater Certification

Mini Domestic Water Heaters by Piped Natural Gas (PNG) are small appliances for household purposes to provide hot water instantly. PNG is considered an energy-efficient energy source for water heating. These heaters are built as you need them for a quick and constant supply of hot water. Therefore, they are good for a small home or kitchen, if you choose to consider these factors. The product has a high-demand market, therefore, BIS certification of the Mini Domestic Water Heater is necessary.

They heat water as it is passing through the unit, which generally allows unlimited hot water from a relatively large storage tank. Although mini storage tank heaters vary in capacities and sizes, these heaters may be smaller and more space-efficient than traditional storage tank heaters. Mini storage tank heaters are usually better to install in smaller homes and apartments.

Key Specification of IS 17150

This standard sets out requirements for instantaneous domestic water heaters having a nominal useful heat output of less than 25 kW (based on the gross calorific value), where the device is connected to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) at a working pressure of 21 mbar (21.41 gf/cm2).

  • This standard covers instantaneous domestic water heaters with PNG and a working pressure of 21 mbar, with a nominal heat output of less than 25 kW.
  • This standard specifies requirements for the construction of the water heater, which includes materials, design, and components.
  • It also covers performance requirements such as heating capacity, gas consumption, and overall efficiency of the water heater. Additionally, it outlines the testing methods used to measure compliance with the safety and performance requirements.
  • An inlet water-controlled appliance has the principal constructional and performance qualities specified for the instantaneous domestic water heater. It also determines appropriate test methods to test the different test characteristics.
  • The mercurous nitrate test shall be passed by all the copper and copper alloy forged and cast parts (season cracking test). Non-metallic materials normally in contact with the gas shall not undergo a change in weight or volume of more than 15 percent when immersed in pentane for 72 hours at room temperature.
  • The gas inlet connection shall provide for a rigid connection. All water connections shall consist of copper or brass tubes with an internal diameter not less than 6 mm and with a wall thickness of not less than 0.5 mm.
  • The gas and water connections shall be located at the base of the appliance. It shall be possible to connect the appliance to a supply located in a plane parallel or perpendicular to the wall upon which the appliance is fixed.
  • The flame failure device shall control the admission of gas to the main burner and, in some cases, to any ignition pilot.
  • An ignition device shall be fitted to the appliance. If it is provided in the form of a pilot, then it shall be possible to light it with ease, either using a matchstick or by a special ignition device.

BIS Certification Scope of Mini Domestic Water Heater under IS 17150

This standard applies to instantaneous-type domestic water heaters with a nominal useful heat output of less than 25 kW (based on gross calorific value), for use with piped natural gases (PNG) at a working pressure of 21 mbar (21.41 gf/cm?). It uses water inlet control and sets out the main constructional and performance characteristics for an instantaneous domestic water heater. It also sets out suitable test methods for a selection of test characteristics. It does not cover appliances for boiling water.

This standard has been divided into three sections for convenience:

  • Section 1 — Construction
  • Section 2 — Performance requirements
  • Section 3 — General
