BIS Certification for
Toilet Appliances

IS 302 Part 1
isi mark for Toilet Appliances IS 302 Part 1:2024/IEC 60335-1

BIS Certification for toilet appliances under IS 302 Part 1 ensures product safety and regulatory compliance for a wide range of Household and similar electrical appliances, helping manufacturers meet the quality and safety requirements set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Products certified under this standard demonstrate compliance with electrical safety, insulation and other critical safety requirements.

Sanitary equipment, such as bidet seats, electric toilets, and self-flushing mechanisms, is common in residential premises, hotels, hospitals, shopping malls, and offices in India. The Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order makes it compulsory to have these devices in all premises in India. In view of the growing consumer demands and expectations for hygiene and comfort, the performance and safety of toilet appliances have become integral to contemporary sanitation. The Indian Standard IS 302 Part 1:2024 corresponds to the International Electrotechnical Commission standard IEC 60336-1, which provides design and safety considerations for electrical toilet devices. Non-compliance with the BIS licence in respect of toilet appliances attracts severe punishment and a fine.

What are Toilet Appliances under IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1?

Under the IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1: 2020 standard framework, "Toilet Appliances" refers to electrical and electronic devices integrated into modern sanitary systems that require electrical power to operate.

Because these products operate in high-humidity bathroom environments where electrical currents run close to water, they are classified as high-risk devices. In India, they fall under a mandatory quality control order (QCO), requiring valid BIS ISI Mark Certification to be legally manufactured, imported, or sold.

Testing Parameters for Toilet Appliances IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1

Toilet appliances must be tested in accordance with IS 302 Part 1/IEC 60335-1 to obtain the BIS ISI mark. The applicable general safety testing parameters are as follows. These tests verify the appliance's electrical, mechanical, and thermal safety requirements:

  • Moisture Resistance: These appliances are used in wet environments and must pass IP (Ingress Protection) water-resistance testing to ensure safe operation when exposed to humidity or accidental moisture.
  • Protection Against Electric Shock: Testing ensures that no live parts are accessible to the user and that the user is protected from accidental contact with them.
  • Leakage Current and Electric Strength: Appliances are tested at operating temperatures to ensure insulation integrity and prevent electrical leakage.
  • Provision for Earthing: This test ensures that all conductive parts are safely grounded to reduce the risk of electric shock.
  • Temperature Rise and Overheating: Testing verifies that heating components, motors, and wiring do not reach hazardous temperatures under both normal and abnormal operating conditions.
