Primary lead, the most durable material, has become the backbone for various industries because of its reliability and flexibility. This product is helpful in sectors concerned with high-quality performance. Primary lead ingots are listed under quality and specification according to Indian Standard IS 27 in India. It defines the stringent quality requirements for the material at domestic and overseas levels.
The ISI Mark Certificate is necessary for market compliance for business activities, including manufacturing, selling, and importing diverse products into the Indian market. Products are tested for compliance with safety and quality benchmarks set forth by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).BIS grants the BIS/ISI certification for products that comply with standards.
Primary leads are lead metals extracted straight from ore deposits through smelting operations, generally by roasting the sulfide ores to oxides and reducing them to metallic lead. The process has two stages: the typical procedure would be converting lead concentrate to bullion, then refining the bullion.
The primary lead industry is being pressured to develop more energy-efficient, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly methods, and to develop new markets and applications. The use of pure lead in batteries, along with cables, construction sectors, and other domains, is very significant. Lead that is not in conformance to standards produces situations that are very serious medically and damages products. This is why BIS Certification of Primary Lead is so important.
It lays down the requirements for primary lead ingots obtained from ore or comparable raw material. This standard is not concerned with those requirements which may relate to reclaim lead or secondary lead produced from lead scrap as raw materials through any refining process; such leads are separately dealt with in IS 3717.
The Primary Lead (Quality Control) Order, 2025, directs that all primary leads locally produced or imported must be in conformity with the Indian Standard IS 27 and must carry a BIS Standard Mark. Published by the Ministry of Mines, this order comes into force after six months from its publication in the Gazette of India. It extends its operation to all primary leads except for goods or articles meant for export.

The primary lead must conform to and be IS 27 certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards under a license granted to BIS under Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations of 2018. BIS serves as both the certifying body and enforcement authority for this order.
IS 27 under BIS Certification specifies the requirements for primary lead ingots produced from ore or similar raw materials, excluding reclaimed or secondary lead. The standard sets five grades of primary lead, depending on the minimum content of lead, with specific limitations placed on contaminants such as silver, iron, copper, and bismuth.
