Humidifiers IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1

The BIS Certification for Humidifiers has become mandatory in India under the IS 302 Part 1:2024/IEC 60335-1. Manufacturers and importers must obtain the ISI Mark before selling these products in the Indian market. The regulations are mandatory under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order. As indoor air quality becomes increasingly important, demand for effective, safe humidification solutions has surged, making this certification crucial for manufacturers and consumers alike.

As indoor air quality becomes increasingly important, demand for effective, safe humidification solutions has surged, making this certification crucial for manufacturers and consumers alike. IS 302: Part 1:2024 lays down regulations for the safety of domestic electrical devices, including humidifiers, and specifies that the maximum voltage for single-phase appliances is 250 V, and 415 V for other appliances. Ordinary security measures are in effect, but do not account for the fact that children may apply the devices without supervision. Moreover, some devices are not included in this standard.

Testing Parameters for Humidifiers  IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1

The strict testing criteria of IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1 include inspections of electric appliances for key mechanical, electrical, and thermal characteristics, thus ensuring customer safety. The requirements imply the following tests:

  • Protection Against Electric Shock: Checks of sufficient insulation, discovery of any live parts accessible without protection, and existence of proper earthing arrangements.
  • Leakage Current and Electric Strength: These are tested under normal operating temperatures so that the appliance should not create any risk of being shocked while functioning.
  • Resistance to Humidity: Special tests are conducted to avoid unwanted results due to the machine working in wet conditions.
  • Abnormal Operation and Defect: Potential hazards are simulated so that the device does not ignite in unaccounted-for situations.
  • Mechanical Strength and Construction: The durability of the case when hit, stability of the construction, as well as the adequacy of the internal circuit and the distance between the conducting parts.
  • Resistance to Heat and Ignition: It includes ignition tests on non-metal materials that prevent combustion.
