BIS Certification for
Fabric Steamer
The BIS Certification for Fabric Steamer is mandatory under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances Quality Control Order (QCO). These products must comply with the quality and safety standards specified in IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1 to be legally manufactured, sold, or imported in the Indian Market. The BIS has set the final implementation deadline of 1st October for General Manufacturers and Importers, 1st January for Small Enterprises, and 1st April for Micro Enterprises.
Fabric steamers are generally electric devices that remove wrinkles from clothes using steam. Since these devices operate on electricity and produce heat and steam, it is vital to ensure their safety and quality. To protect consumers from electrical hazards, including electric shock, fire, and overheating, fabric steamers must comply with the safety requirements set by applicable Indian laws. BIS Certification under IS 302 Part 1:2024 specifies the basic safety requirements for domestic and similar electrical appliances, including fabric steamers.
Testing Parameters for Fabric Steamer IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1
Testing Fabric Steamers under IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1 involves rigorous safety parameters, including protection against electric shock, abnormal operation, moisture resistance, and insulation testing. The essential testing parameters include the following verifications:
- Electric Shock Protection: Prevents the user from coming in contact with live components of the electrical appliance. The electric components exposed to users are tested with several standard test probes, such as a finger probe.
- Current and Input Power: Current and voltage are measured during normal use as part of testing to ensure the accepted value remains within the standard range of ±20% of the normal value.
- Temperature and Heat Production: The appliance is operated in a controlled testing environment to analyse the internal conditions.
- Water Resistance: During water steam generation, many problems can arise, leading to a fire hazard or even heat damage.
- Electric Strength and Leakage Current: Measured during device operation. High Voltage (HV) Testing is used to determine how strong the device is when high electric voltage is applied.
- Test for Abnormal Operation: It was determined that fabric steamers can run out of water. The testers will use the device without water to check whether the appliance is safe and should not cause a fire.
BIS Certification Process for Fabric Steamer in India
