BIS Certification for
Electrolysers

IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1
Electrolysers IS 302 Part 1:2024

BIS Certification for Electrolysers is mandatory in India under IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1. Electrolysers are devices that utilise electrolysis technology to generate hydrogen and oxygen by separating water.  As they use high electric current and power electronics, they must comply with strict electric safety regulations. As a manufacturer, importer, or seller, obtaining a BIS License in India demonstrates that your product meets the requirements for protection against electric shock and insulation resistance, high temperatures, fire hazards, abnormal operating conditions, and mechanical strength.

Electrolysers must undergo safety tests, electrical assessment, and factory inspections in accordance with the standards established in India. A valid BIS License for Electrolysers enables the manufacturer to carry out operations using the ISI certification mark, meaning that the product has met all required safety criteria.

Testing Parameters for Electrolysers IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1

According to IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1:2020, electrolysis devices must adhere to specific parameters for electrical, thermal, and mechanical safety. Equipment should either decompose water or change its chemical properties, with no hazards of electric shock, overheating, or fire. The BIS requires that the following parameters be met:

  • Protecting against Electric Shock: Tests whether the design prevents users from accessing live parts of the device.
  • Leakage Current & Electric Strength: Tests insulation and dielectric strength at the working temperature.
  • Earth Continuity Test: Used to ensure correct functioning of the earthing system in Class I devices.
  • Moisture Resistance & Water Spillage Test: Tests the casing and device to prevent water leakage and short-circuiting.
  • Abnormal Operation & Fault Conditions Test: Tests whether the device can handle blocked vents and broken components without causing fire.
  • Heat, Fire, and Glow-Wire Test: Tests whether the plastic or the inner insulating material catches fire in case of malfunction.
  • Transient Overvoltages Test: Tests if electrical components are capable of withstanding sudden bursts of electricity.
  • Mechanical Strength Test: Ensures the device can withstand shocks and drops.

BIS Certification Process for Electrolysers in India

Both Indian and foreign manufacturers must follow the certification process to obtain the ISI Mark on their Electrolysers:
