BIS Certification for Electric Water Boilers IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1

The BIS Certification for Electric Water Boiler is mandatory in India under the Safety of Household, Commercial, and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2026. These products need to comply with (IS 302 Part 1): IEC 60335-1.  The ISI Mark assures the safety, reliability, and compliance with Indian Regulations.

Electric water Boilers are mostly used in Indian households to heat water for beverages, cooking, or sanitation. As this product operates on electricity, the quality standards and safety specifications become important. IS  302 (Part 1) / IEC 60335-1 include insulation, thermal protection, and shock prevention. Without a valid product certification, manufacturers can face product seizure and financial penalty under the BIS Act 2016.

What Are Electric Water Boilers under IS 302 Part 1 Explained

Electric water Boilers are essential household appliances in day-to-day life; they use electricity to heat water and range from small consumer appliances. It is a tabletop or countertop unit, a larger water dispenser that heats and holds water at a higher temperature. These types of products don’t rely on gas or oil for heating water; it often uses electricity.

IS 302 (Part 1): IEC 60335-1 covers the safety requirements for electrical appliances, including single-phase appliances with a maximum voltage of 250 volts (V) and multi-phase appliances with a maximum voltage supplied not greater than 480 volts. For Electric Water Boilers, this Indian Standard specifies performance under stress, electrical safety, and protection against hazards such as electric shock and overheating.

Key Highlights for IS 302 (Part 1) for Electric Water Boilers

The Indian Standard 302 (Part 1): IEC 60335-1 ensures that boilers in the Indian market are properly tested for thermal, electrical, and mechanical hazards. Here are the requirements for an Electric Water Boiler:

Parameters

Requirements

ISI Mark Certification

All manufacturing, importing, and selling of electric water heater equipment requires compliance with the BIS.

Safety for Consumers

An electric water heater must be shown to comply with electrical shock protection requirements.

Electric Strength and Leakage Current

Insulation is evaluated for electrical strength and leakage current by assessing temperature limits.

Moisture Resistance

Moisture ingress protection should be evaluated while the electric water heater is in use.

Operational Test

The boiler should not be destroyed or burned if it operates without water when accessing a battery for abnormal operation.

Why is BIS Certification required for Electric Water Boilers for Manufacturers?

The ISI mark for electric kettle/boiler India under IS 302 Part 1: IEC 60335-1 is not just a formality; it’s an important step before selling your product. Here’s why it matters for domestic and foreign manufacturers:

  • Legal Market Access: The Bureau of Indian Standards requires that businesses obtain certification before they can legally produce and sell electric water boilers in India.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Non-compliance with the Quality Control Order 2026 may result in product seizures, fines, and/or business closures.
  • Retail and E-commerce Entry: Products with ISI certification are more likely to gain access to retail and e-commerce channels than those without it.
  • Consumer Trust: The ISI Mark indicates to consumers that the certified product has undergone extensive safety tests, supervised by the Government of India.
  • Competitive Advantage: Products with certification stand out in a large market, as safety and quality are critical factors for most buyers.
  • Manufacturing Improvement: One objective of the BIS certification process is to help manufacturers reduce product defects and improve overall product quality.

IS 302 Part 1 Testing Requirements for Electric Water Boilers

IS 302 Part 1: IEC 60335-1 testing requirements establishes various testing parameters for Electric Water Boilers to ensure high safety, reliability and product quality. Some of these testing parameters include:

  • Safety from electric shock by preventing access to live parts.
  • Power input and current to be within ±10 % of the rated value.
  • Temperature rise/heating tests to limit overheating during its normal use
  • Leakage current/electrical strength must be tested at operating temperatures to establish electrical safety.
  • Moisture resistance to no risk of electric shock to the user when the working environment is damp;
  • Mechanical strength and construction to ensure structural integrity and safe design;
  • The boiler will be tested generally 15 min after reaching 95 °C.
