DC Supplied/ Battery-Operated Vacuum Cleaners IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1

IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1

DC Supplied/ Battery-Operated Vacuum Cleaners IS 302 Part 1

DC-supplied/Battery-Operated Vacuum Cleaners must obtain BIS/ISI Certification under IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1. To obtain BIS certification, a vacuum cleaner must show compliance with the IS 302 standards laid out in IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1, which sets out instructions on the standard safety of household appliances. The certification helps fulfil all safety standards and prevent users from electric shocks, overheating, fires, damage of any kind, etc.

Because these appliances combine electricity, heat generation, mechanical motion, and battery chemistry, they pose potential safety risks if poorly designed. Overheating motors, insulation failure, charger faults, battery thermal runaway, or damaged wiring can lead to electric shock, burns, fire hazards, or property damage. To minimise these risks and ensure consumer safety, the Government of India requires manufacturers and importers to obtain a BIS Certificate for Vacuum Cleaners under IS 302 (Part 1):2024 before selling in the Indian market.

Testing Parameters for DC Supplied/ Battery-Operated Vacuum Cleaners IS 302 Part 1: 2024/IEC 60335-1

The IS 302(Part 1):2024/IEC 60335-1 emphasises different Testing Parameters for DC-supplied/Battery-Operated Vacuum Cleaners, such as electrical safety, performance, and mechanical durability related to battery charging. The main areas that require due evaluation include heating and abnormal operation.

  • Power Input and Current: Verification of DC power consumption and charging levels with respect to stated specifications.
  • Temperature Rise: Measurement of thermal limits in case of normal and heavy loads for the motor housing, circuits, and battery packs.
  • Leakage Current and Electric Strength: Evaluation of insulation efficiency under operational conditions to prevent power losses.
  • Mechanical Strength: Assessment of the strength of plastic or metallic external shells against falling, hitting, and rough handling.
  • Metal-ion Battery Safety: Testing of dedicated charging protections, voltage limits, and temperature limitations of lithium/metal-ion batteries.
  • Abnormal Operation: Emulation of airflow failure, unmoving rotors, or wrong charge cycles to confirm the triggering of the inbuilt protection system.
  • Moisture and Dust Resistance: Inspection of the sealing qualities (IP ratings) of the casing against moisture and dirt during cleaning.
