Introduction to Indian Standard IS 302, electrical appliances for stationary storage type electric water heaters. IS 302 covers electrical appliances for stationary storage type electric water heaters. This standard has been formulated in a way that directs manufacturers of “stationary storage type electric water heaters” products and specifies the standards for safety and performance requirements for electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation hazards of stationary storage type electric water heaters.
IS 302 specifies the safety and quality parameters or characteristics of the stationary storage type electric water heaters:
Under section 14 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, has issued the Quality control order.
As per the Quality control order, all the manufacturers of electrical appliances for stationary storage type electric water heaters are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification, as obtaining the ISI/BIS Certification is a mandatory requirement for manufacturers of stationary storage type of electric water heaters to sell their products in the Indian market.
As per IS 302, stationary type electric water heaters are classified as Class I, Class II, or Class III. For safety measures, outdoor water heaters must have at least IPX4 protection and while others have at least IPX1.
