BEE Registration for
Air Compressors

Schedule 27

BEE Registration of Air Compressors is a compliance procedure carried out by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Standards and Labelling Program for selected air compressors in India. Air compressors fall under the appropriate BEE energy efficiency scheme, where their performance is evaluated to determine energy consumption and efficiency. Schedule 27 lists the Indian standard governing the performance and evaluation of air compressors, which is registered as voluntary labelling under IS 5456, Code of Practice for Testing of Positive Displacement Type Air Compressors.

For companies looking to register their Air Compressors with BEE in India, the process involves identifying the applicable criteria, testing the machines in a suitable lab, drafting technical documents, applying for BEE registration, and finally undergoing scrutiny and approval.

Air Compressor Testing Requirements and NABL Lab under IS 5456

The testing should be conducted in a laboratory accredited by NABL or an ILAC MRA, in accordance with IS 5456 and IS/ISO 1217.

  • Free Air Delivery (FAD): It measures the actual volume of air delivered in compressed form under specified reference conditions.
  • Specific Power Consumption: Measures the power consumed per unit volume of air delivered. This determines the machine's efficiency.
  • Input Power Measurement: Measures the total input electrical power consumed.
  • Full Load and Part Load Efficiency: Measures the power drawn and air delivery at various pressures and capacities, as per BEE schedules.
  • Lubrication and cooling: Oil-lubricated/oil-injected, either with air-cooling or water-cooling.
  • Operating Pressure: The operating pressure at full load should be at least 500 kPa (5 bar [g]).
  • Motor Capacity: Motor rating should be from 0.37kW to 500 kW.
  • Electrical Supply: The compressor's rated voltage must be 230V/415V at 50Hz AC.

Step-by-Step BEE Registration Process for Air Compressors

The steps required to obtain BEE registration for air compressors are as follows:

  • Verify Applicability of the Product: The manufacturer/applicant shall confirm that the product is applicable under BEE Schedule 27.
  • List relevant standards: Test and energy performance evaluations shall be conducted in accordance with IS 5456.
  • Product Testing: The model shall be tested to determine its parameters, including the solar water heater.
  • Get the Test Report: Upon successful completion of the testing process, the applicant will receive the test report from an NABL-certified lab or another authorised lab, as required.
  • Preparation of the Application and Relevant Documents: The application document and other relevant documents related to BEE S&L will be prepared by the applicant.
  • BEE Application Process: BEE application shall be made through the respective BEE Standards & Labelling registration process along with other relevant documents and applicable charges.
  • Scrutiny and Verification by BEE: The BEE shall undertake scrutiny and verification of the application along with other relevant test documents. Any discrepancies must be resolved before approval.
  • BEE Approval and Star Rating: Upon acceptance of the application, BEE shall grant the product approval/registration and assign an energy-efficiency rating. The BEE S&L program rates the products on a 1-to-5-star scale; the higher the star rating, the higher the energy efficiency.

Validity, Renewal & Timeline of BEE Registration for Air Compressors

The BEE registration process for Testing and approval generally takes 4 to 8 weeks, including roughly 20 to 25 working days for BEE's review once the application and test report are submitted.

Renewal of BEE Registration

  • When to apply: Apply well ahead of expiry, per BEE's renewal notice
