IMEI Number Registration and importance

The IMEI Registration is mandatory compliance in India for mobile phones and wireless communication devices. The government of India introduced this system to ensure that only genuine, safe, and traceable devices operate on Indian telecom networks. Without IMEI Registration, mobile devices can be blocked from accessing networks, making them unusable in India.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) of India has published a Notification on September 26, 2022, amending the “Prevention of Tampering of the Mobile Device Equipment Identification Number, Rules, 2017.” Indian manufacturers must register International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers for every mobile phone with the DoT before selling the phones starting January 1, 2023.

As of September 26, 2022, importers must register IMEI Numbers for every mobile phone imported into India for sale, testing, research and development, and other purposes with the DoT before importing the phones. This blog explains what IMEI Registration is, who needs it, why it is compulsory, and how businesses can comply easily.

What is an IMEI Number?

IMEI number is a unique 15-digit code of mobile devices, starting with manufacturers and importers sharing comprehensive information and documentation with the Central Equipment Identity Register (managed by the Department of Telecommunications) to obtain certification and input IMEI numbers into the national registry. The purpose behind it is to establish firm security and increase traceability, aiming to reduce or prevent mobile loss or theft worldwide. Authorities are able to block network accessibility of stolen devices using the extensive database of all the IMEI numbers, helping speed up the recovery process.

The whole procedure consists of manufacturers and importers delivering detailed data and documentation in order to receive the certificate and to have IMEI numbers incorporated into the national database.

Why is IMEI Registration Mandatory in India?

The rapid increase in mobile-related crimes, mainly frauds & thefts, has led India to impose a mandatory IMEI registration upon every manufacturer or importer as a robust security measure. This registration helps the Department of Telecommunications to eliminate duplicate, bad, or non-licensed devices. Users of any mobile device can verify the IMEI number registration status of their device if they have any doubts regarding its legitimacy.

The U.S. Government of India imposed an IMEI Registration and thus established a controlled environment for the mobile devices and made a safe and secure telecom ecosystem. Reasons for the same are outlined below in simple words:

  • Prevents Sale of Counterfeit and Illegal Devices

The IMEI Registration scheme allows only the reported good and legally accepted mobile devices to be used on the Indian telecom networks. It thus helps to take out fake, duplicate, and unlawfully produced handsets from the market.

  • Helps Track and Block Lost or Stolen Mobile Phones

Telecom companies and the government, with the help of registered IMEI numbers, can spot the lost and stolen devices very fast, and also they can block and trace the devices, which in turn will lessen the misuse and discourage mobile phone thefts.

  • Strengthens National Defense

The establishment of a centralized IMEI database furnishes the regulatory authorities with the capability to legally observe the use of devices, and it effectively stops the use of unregistered or anonymous devices for illegitimate or anti-national activities.

  • Guarantees Network Protection and Quality

The IMEI Registration permits only the connection of devices that have been approved and tested with the network, thereby avoiding technical interference and ensuring smooth and reliable telecom services.

  • Prevents Consumers from Unsafe Devices

IMEI Registration  makes it mandatory for all mobile devices to be compliant, hence protecting users from substandard, unsafe, or defective phones that could endanger the user's health or life.

  • Controls Import and Mobile Sale

The IMEI database is a crucial tool for monitoring the flow of mobile phones into the country and ensuring that only those that are legitimate, safe, and of high quality are allowed for manufacture, importation, and sale in India.

  • Facilitates Smooth Telecom Regulation

The IMEI data provides regulators with a clearer view and a better grip on device compliance, enabling them to manage telecom infrastructure and enforce regulations with the desired efficiency.

Where can you find the IMEI Number?

You can locate the International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI number usually inside a mobile phone’s battery compartment. You can also find it on your mobile screen by dialling *#06#. When your phone gets stolen & you register a complaint, it’s the IMEI that’s used for blocking the device from accessible mobile networks & helps in recovery, thus acting as a fundamental tool to prevent cell phone fraud & theft cases. Thus, an additional way is to navigate to your phone’s settings screen and check it there.

Final Words

IMEI registration is one of the key factors that help the Indian telecom industry to be secure, dependable, and properly controlled. It does this by allowing only the valid and authorized mobile devices to be used on Indian networks. Thus, the whole process contributes to the elimination of fake products, reduction in mobile theft, enhancement of national security, and consumer protection.

For the manufacturers, importers, and brand owners, IMEI registration is not only a legal formality, but it is also a compliance requirement without which they cannot enter the Indian market or operate there without disruptions. if you want your registration to be done on time and avoid blocking of devices, penalties, and business risks, you must have an IMEI Registration consultant in India
