The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has officially added IS 19967:2026, the Indian standard for Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Cables, effective from October 14, 2026. As electric vehicle use increases in India, certified charging cables will help manufacturers ensure product safety, quality, and durability, meeting the expectations of distributors and users.

ISI Certification helps demonstrate that a product complies with Indian Standards, as required by the certification scheme. A BIS product certification can strengthen buyers' trust and improve the position of manufacturers and importers in the Indian market. The process involves applicability checks, documentation, product testing, and license issuance.

Note: IS 19967:2026 is currently voluntary but is expected to be made mandatory by the Government at the earliest.

Overview of EV Charging Cables for BIS Certification

A BIS certificate helps ensure EV charging cables meet applicable Indian Standard requirements for safety, quality, and performance. EV charging cables carry electricity from a power source, such as a wall socket or charging station, to the vehicle. The charging cable supports both AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current) fast charging. The standard sets the rules on how the EV charging cable must be built and tested to ensure safety between the charging station and vehicle. Manufacturers and importers can comply with the standard to sell their products in the market.

Key Highlights of IS 19967:2026 Under Scheme-I

IS 19967:2026 sets safety and performance requirements for EV charging cables, and BIS Scheme-I (ISI Mark) grants certification. The key aspects and specifications are:

1. Construction Materials
Prescribes flexible copper conductors, advanced insulation layers, and outer sheathing layers to sustain structural stability under repeated mechanical stress.

2. Thermal Management Protocol
To prevent insulation breakdown and ensure BIS electrical certification under sustained high current. The cables must be tested for thermal dispersion and structural bearing under extreme environmental temperatures.

3. Operating Voltage Limits

  • The standard covers flexible charging cables categorised by clear maximum voltage limits:
  • Alternating Current (AC): Rated voltages up to and including 1,100 V AC.
  • Direct Current (DC): Rated voltages up to and including 1,500 V DC.

4. Outdoor Testing Protocol
The standard specifies testing for mechanical crushing resistance, structural durability, UV degradation resistance, and protection against moisture and dust inflow.

BIS Update for EV Charging Cables

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has published IS 19967:2026, covering electric vehicle charging cables with rated voltages up to 1,100 V AC or 1,500 V DC. This standard specifies requirements for EV charging cables used to supply electrical power to electric vehicles. Compliance is voluntary for now; if the government makes it mandatory, manufacturers and importers would have to comply with IS 19967:2026 and carry the BIS certification mark before selling the product in the market.

BIS Certification Process for Electric Vehicle Charging Cables

The BIS certification process in India involves identifying the applicable Indian Standard, preparing documents, conducting product testing, and completing the required assessment. The process generally involves the following steps:

  • Identify the Applicable Indian Standard: Determine the relevant BIS standard for the product.
  • Prepare the Required Documents: Gather the applicable business, manufacturing, quality control, and product-related documents.
  • Submit the BIS Application: Complete the relevant application and submit the required documents through the applicable BIS process.
  • Factory Inspection: BIS assesses the manufacturing facility, production process, BIS Quality Control Orders (QCOs) measures, and testing capabilities.
  • Product Sample Testing: BIS tests product samples in a BIS laboratory, a BIS-recognised laboratory, or the manufacturing facility, as applicable.
  • Application Review: BIS reviews the inspection findings, test results, and submitted documents to determine whether the requirements are met.
  • Grant of BIS Licence: If all applicable requirements are satisfied, BIS grants the licence to use the relevant Standard Mark.
