BIS guidelines for Cast Aluminum and its Alloys-Ingots

This standard specifies the requirements and test methods for Cast aluminium and aluminium alloys for the manufacture of utensils.  This standard contains clauses 6.1.2, 6.2, 7.2.1, 7.2.2, 8.1, 8.2, 10.1.1, 11, and 13.2, which provide discretion to purchaser or call for agreement between the supplier and the purchaser. While revising this standard assistance has been drawn from BS 1490: 1988 ‘Aluminium and aluminium alloy ingots and castings for general engineering purposes’.

 

To decide whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, .be rounded off by IS 2: 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised )‘. The number of significant places retained in the rounded-off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

 

Aluminium and aluminium alloy ingots and castings are coded as per IS 5052 based on designations - 1900, 1950, 2280, 2285, 2550, 4223, 4223A, 4225, 4300, 4323, 4420, 4423, 4450, 4520, 4525, 4528, 4600, 4600A, 4628, 4635, 4682, 5230 and 5500.

This standard covers the requirements of cast aluminium and its alloys in the form of ingots and castings for general engineering purposes.

  • Hardness
  • Pressure Test

 

Recently Ministry of Mines has published the Quality Control Order on 31st August, 2023 (QCO), according to which Aluminium and aluminium alloy ingots and castings as per IS 617 will be mandatory after 3 months of the publication date of QCO.
