The audit was conducted by Mr. Dheeraj Singh, Technical Executive at ERCS Pvt. Ltd., who provided end-to-end support throughout the BIS certification process.
From documentation and factory inspection readiness to audit coordination and compliance, we ensure a smooth and efficient certification journey for the Malaysian manufacturer. Let’s delve deeper and know more about this journey.
About the Standard: IS 14407
The Indian Standard that stipulates the requirements for aluminium cans used in beverage packaging, including carbonated and non-carbonated drinks, is IS 14407. Quality benchmarks are defined concerning:
- Material and construction
- Internal and external surface finishing
- Dimensional tolerance
- Pressure resistance
- Leakage-proof performance
- Food safety and hygiene considerations
In pursuance of the Quality Control Order of the Government of India, adherence to IS 14407 is compulsory for any manufacturer intending to export aluminium beverage cans into India.
About the Malaysia BIS Audit
The successful conduct of the BIS audit in a manufacturing area of an established company engaged in aluminium cans in Malaysia was towards certification so that it could legally supply its products in India.
ERCS Pvt. Ltd. undertook the management of the whole audit process, from filing the initial application to preparing documentation, conducting pre-audit assessments, providing technical consultancy, and coordinating with BIS officers during the inspection of the factory.
The audit, conducted under the Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme (FMCS), demonstrated that the manufacturer complied with all the necessary provisions of IS 14407. After a successful inspection and review, the Malaysian company is now certified by BIS to affix the ISI Mark on their aluminium cans for beverages.
Why is BIS Certification Compulsory for Malaysian Manufacturers?
Malaysian manufacturers who wish to export their products to India must obtain BIS Product Certification due to regulatory mandates enforced by the Indian government. Here’s the breakdown of specific reasons:
1. Product Safety and Consumer Protection: Through BIS certification, the products comply with Indian safety, performance, and quality standards. BIS certification protects Indian consumers from poor or unsafe products from abroad.
2. Market Access to India: Without BIS Certification for Malaysian manufacturers cannot clear Indian customs on the listed products. It is a mandatory pathway to access the Indian market legally and competitively.
3. Trust and Brand Reputation: Having a BIS mark signifies trustworthiness and compliance with Indian manufacturers. This increases brand comfort and acceptance in the market for Malaysian exporters.
4. Avoidance of Penalties and Seizures: If these standards are not complied with, there may be penalties, monetary fines, or the product may be seized by Indian authorities. In the end, the BIS certification is mandatory, but it must also be commercially imperative for the existing and future market potential in India.
5. Harmonization with Indian Standards: India does not accept only foreign certifications (CE, ISO, ASTM, etc.) for specified categories. Malaysian manufacturers will need to understand Indian standards (i.e, IS codes) and manufacture to these standards to follow conformity assessment pathways.
