BIS Inspection for Ferrosilicon in Bhutan

ERCS Private Limited is pleased to announce the completion of the BIS Audit for Ferrosilicon as per IS 1110 for Bhutanese Manufacturers. The audit indicates that the Ferrosilicon manufactured meets the Indian Quality Standard of Chemical Composition and Physical Properties for products manufactured by Indian manufacturers, thus paving the way for obtaining BIS Certification and the ISI Mark.

The BIS Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) consisted of factory inspection, laboratory testing, and quality control. The audit was completed in accordance with IS 1110, which is an important Indian Standard for Ferrosilicon products manufactured for use in steel-making. This accomplishment represents a significant achievement for Bhutanese Manufacturers wishing to export Ferrosilicon to the Indian Market with confidence and in accordance with the standards.

Importance of BIS Certification for Ferrosilicon under FMCS

Ferrosilicon is a critical alloy widely used in the steel and foundry industry for deoxidation and alloying purposes. To ensure consistent quality and safety, the Government of India mandates BIS certification for ferrosilicon intended for sale or use in India. Compliance with IS 1110 is mandatory for foreign manufacturers who want to export ferrosilicon to India legally.

IS 1110 specifies:

  • Chemical composition limits
  • Physical characteristics
  • Sampling and testing methods
  • Quality assurance requirements

Overview of the BIS FMCS Audit Process

The BIS audit performed in Bhutan had four primary components:

Step 1 - Factory Inspection: The factory inspection involved a joint review between the BIS officials and the ERCS experts and included the following:

  • The on-site visit of the manufacturing facilities and the review of the manufacturing processes.
  • A review of the raw materials utilised to produce the item and the handling thereof.
  • A review of the furnace operating and process controls
  • A review of all test processes within the facility.

Step 2 - Evaluation of Quality Management System: The BIS audit evaluated the procedures relating to the quality control at all stages of production; also reviewed the procedures used for documenting and maintaining all test records; evaluated the calibration procedures for all test equipment; and evaluated the consistency of product quality.

Step 3 -  Sample Testing and Laboratory Testing of Products: The samples of ferrosilicon were drawn according to the guidelines of the BIS audit, and the chemical composition and physical properties were tested in a laboratory. The laboratory results were reviewed to ensure compliance with the requirements of IS 1110.

Step 4- Compliance Verification: The results of the audit were all reviewed to ensure compliance with the requirements contained within the BIS standards, and the FMCS certification by the BIS of all qualifying manufacturers will be forthcoming.
