BIS Inspection for Ferrosilicon

ERCS Private Limited is excited to announce that the BIS audit of Ferrosilicon, as per IS 1110, has been completed in Bhutan. This important milestone demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that global manufacturers meet the quality assurance requirements of the Indian market while respecting their domestic regulations.
The audit was conducted in very good order and was led technically by ERCS’s compliance team, focusing on whether the Ferrosilicon product specification was met. With the completion of the audit, Bhutanese manufacturers can now export Ferrosilicon to India with a BIS certification, which simplifies the regulatory approvals the marketability of the product.

Understanding Ferrosilicon and IS 1110

Ferrosilicon is an essential alloy used extensively in steelmaking and foundry applications, primarily as a deoxidizing agent and alloying element. The Indian Standard IS 1110 defines the chemical composition, physical properties, and other quality parameters of Ferrosilicon, ensuring consistency and performance in downstream applications.
The standard mandates specific ranges for silicon content and limits for carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and aluminum impurities, ensuring that the alloy contributes to cleaner steel and improved metallurgical characteristics.

Objectives of the BIS Audit

The BIS audit in Bhutan was done to determine a manufacturer’s competence to produce Ferrosilicon consistently in accordance with the IS 1110 requirements, and to determine whether a strong quality control system is in place that can ensure the following aspects:

  • Compliance with chemical composition requirements through proper material sourcing and testing within the facility.
  • Control and documentation of the manufacturing process
  • Traceable quality from raw material to finished product
  • Testing facilities and testing equipment that are properly calibrated and meet BIS requirements.
  • Labelling and packaging that meets the BIS Standard Mark usage rules.

Key Steps in the Audit Process

The audit for BIS, organized with the support of ERCS, was conducted in a number of steps to allow for a thorough assessment of the process.

1. Application and Documentation: ERCS assisted the Bhutanese manufacturer in preparing and submitting the BIS application and related technical documents, including raw material specifications, plant layout, and test reports.

2. Factory Audit: This audit required BIS officials to visit and conduct an in-person audit of the facility in coordination with ERCS representatives. The audit took place and addressed the following aspects of the facility:

  • Raw material management and chemical mixing
  • Operation of the furnace and tapping
  • Sampling and laboratory testing
  • Quality assurance and record-keeping
  • Calibration of laboratory and production machinery

3. Product Sampling and Third-Party Testing: BIS auditors collected samples of Ferrosilicon for independent testing in a laboratory registered by BIS. The samples were sent to a laboratory to verify compliance with IS 1110.

4. Compliance Review and Certification Recommendation: After the audit and testing, the facility received, and the auditor recommended, certification for Ferrosilicon, enabling the manufacturer to apply the ISI Standard Mark label to Ferrosilicon goods shipped to India.

Why BIS Certification is Important for Bhutanese Ferrosilicon Producers

India is among the largest users of Ferrosilicon, especially in the steel and alloy markets. Due to increased demand and regulatory changes, all Ferrosilicon products sold in India are required to have BIS Certification under FMCS

  • This successful audit, for Bhutanese manufacturers:
  • Facilitates access to the Indian market
  • Assures product quality for Indian buyers and compliance
  • Eliminates trade and customs challenges
  • Enhances competitiveness in the regional market

By working with ERCS, the manufacturer achieved certification readiness while going through a streamlined, technically sound, and hassle-free process.
