BIS CRS Extension of Timelines for Implementation of Television Sets

Extension of Timelines for Implementation for Television Sets under CRO Order to 26th July 2026

BIS CRS Extension

The Government of India has announced an important update related to BIS-CRS registration for Television Sets under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order. It is a regulatory framework in India that mandates that specific electronic and IT products meet Indian Safety Standards. This update gives manufacturers and importers additional time to comply with the safety requirements. If you are involved in manufacturing, importing, or selling TVs in India, then CRS Registration is mandatory.

New Government Update for the Extended date

The Government has issued a new extension on 22nd January 2026 to extend the implementation date for Television Sets under the BIS CRS framework. As per the revised schedule, the mandatory compliance will now come into effect from 26th July 2026, instead of the earlier date (26th January 2026). The extension provides manufacturers and importers an additional 6 Months to complete the BIS CRS Registration in India for electronic and IT products in accordance with IS 18112:2022, allowing more time for testing, documentation, and certification.

What Does Extension Mean in Simple Terms?

The Key highlights of Extension Orders are:

  • TV manufacturers and importers can now get more time to comply
  • Until 26th July 2026, TVs can still be sold without BIS CRS Registration
  • After 26th July 2026, BIS Registration becomes mandatory
  • Non-registered TVs will not be allowed for sale in India

Earlier Government Decision on Television Sets

On April 26, 2023, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (section) added Television Sets to the Compulsory Registration list; this implies that only TVs certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) may be sold in India.

Key points from the previous notification:

  • Television sets were added to Serial Number 64 of the CRO list.
  • Television sets must conform to the Indian Standard IS 18112:2022.
  • BIS CRS Registration was made compulsory.
  • The original implementation date was January 26, 2026.

Beneficiaries of the Extension for Television Sets

The Extension Order will allow companies to conduct testing, document their products, and obtain certification at a lower cost than would normally be required. The use of this order will benefit the following groups:

  • Manufacturer of televisions within the United States
  • Importer of television sets
  • Brand owner or OEM
  • New business is trying to enter the market.

What is the Electronics and IT Goods Compulsory Registration Order?

The Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order (also referred to as the CRO Order) is a regulation issued by the Government of India that requires registration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) before the sale of certain types of electronic products in India. The primary objective of the CRO Order is to ensure the safety of consumers and the quality of electronic goods sold in India.

Under the CRO, all products must be tested by a laboratory that is recognized by the Bureau of Indian Standards and comply with the applicable Indian safety standards. The BIS CRS mark will be awarded to those products that have been found to be compliant with the conditions of the CRO Order.

Why Did the Government Extend the Deadline?

Governments usually provide additional time to manufacturers so that they can complete the following:

  • Testing and certifying products;
  • Avoid disruptions in television supply.
  • Support compliance with the new standard; and
  • Achieve a balance between consumer safety and ease of business.

What Should Businesses Do During the Extension Period?

Businesses shouldn't wait to schedule preparation for a product, even with an extended deadline; instead:

  • Testing should be done at Battery Institute of Standards (BIS) certified laboratories.
  • Compliance with IS 18112 needs to be ensured.
  • Test results, compliance documentation, and the application for BIS registration should be completed as early as possible; and
  • Starting early can help to minimise delays and interruptions in business operations.

Conclusion

The government’s move to extend the BIS CRS Registration deadline for Television Sets is a relief for the manufacturers and importers. The new deadline for the implementation of IS 18112 is 26 July 2026. However, after the extension of the deadline, the registration of the BIS Certificate will become mandatory, and any TV that does not comply with the rules will not be allowed to enter the Indian market.
