A manhole cover is a removable plate forming the lid over the opening of a manhole, to prevent anyone or anything from falling in, and to keep out unauthorized persons and material. The bearing surfaces of manhole frames and covers are machined to assure flatness and prevent them from becoming dislodged by traffic.

BIS is a statutory institution established under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act,1986  to promote harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and attending to connected matters in the country.

Precast concrete manhole cover and frame product has been specified in IS 12592:2002 by Bureau of Indian Standards.

SCOPE :

This standard covers the requirements for precast steel reinforced cement concrete manhole covers and frames intended for use in sewerage and storm water drainage.

RAW MATERIALS :

·       Cement - ISI marked conforming to the relevant Indian Standard as mentioned in IS 12592: 2002.

·       All types and sizes of coarse and fine aggregate – clause 4.2 of IS 12592 : 2002 and IS 383

·       Concrete - clause 4.3 of IS 12592: 2002. Strength of concrete shall be ensured by testing concrete cube.

·       All types and sizes of steel - ISI marked conforming to the relevant Indian Standard as mentioned in clause 4.4 of IS 12592: 2002.

·       Steel fibre - clause 4.5 of IS 12592 : 2002

·       Admixtures (if used) - IS 9103.

·       Water - clause 4.7 of IS 12592: 2002 and IS 456.
Note: If different type and/or sizes of steel for reinforcement are used, it shall be treated as additional raw material. Similarly, if source and/or size and types of coarse and fine aggregate have changed, it shall be treated as additional raw material.
