A transformer of  which the magnetic circuit and windings are immersed in oil. Oil-type transformers are used in power distribution or electrical substations. Their core and coils are immersed in oil, which cools and insulates.

• IS 1180 (Part 1) cover Outdoor type Oil immersed Distribution Transformers (2500kVA, 33KV). This standard specifies the requirements and tests including standard loss levels of mineral oil immersed, natural air-cooled, outdoor type, double wound distribution transformers for use in power distribution systems with nominal system voltages up to and including 33 kV and of following types and ratings:

1. a) Three phase ratings up to and including 200 kVA both non-sealed type and sealed type.
2. b) Three phase ratings higher than 200 kVA, up to and including 2 500 kVA both non-sealed type and sealed type.
3. c) Single phase ratings up to and including 25 kVA sealed type.

• Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Electrical Transformers (Quality control) order, 2014
